Research is not prediction: learn to ask a testable question

The idea in plain English

A prediction says what someone thinks will happen. Research defines a question, chooses evidence and explains how the answer could be challenged. A useful market hypothesis states the trigger, action, time window, cost assumptions and failure condition before looking for a flattering result.

The distinction that matters

The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty. It is to keep uncertainty visible and reduce avoidable mistakes in interpretation. A result can be historically accurate without generalizing to another period. Record what you tried, including tests that failed, so the process does not become a collection of only the winning charts.

A practical example

Instead of “this asset will rise,” a fictional researcher asks whether a specified rule behaved differently from a simple benchmark over a defined dataset after costs. The revised question is narrower, but another person can inspect it and discover reasons it may be unreliable.

Try this without moving money

• Write the question before choosing the most attractive chart.
• Define a benchmark, costs and a failure condition.
• Keep a record of every tested variant, not only the best one.

A mistake to avoid

Do not call a backtest proof of future returns. It is evidence about a method applied under specific assumptions.

Before you act
