What is DeFi? Start with the moving parts

Understand wallets, contracts and interfaces before considering a deposit.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

This guide is educational, not personalized financial, legal or security advice. A checklist reduces avoidable mistakes; it cannot make a transaction risk-free.

The idea in plain English

Decentralized finance is a broad label for financial applications built partly on blockchain contracts. A user interface helps you construct an action, a wallet authorizes it and contracts process it according to their rules. The interface, contract, governance and underlying assets are separate components; the word decentralized does not describe every component equally.

The distinction that matters

A protocol can be open-source while still relying on administrator powers, outside price feeds or centrally issued assets. Read what can change, who can change it and how users exit. An accessible deposit button is not proof that withdrawals will always be equally accessible.

A practical example

An illustrative lending interface displays a deposit balance. Behind it, a contract holds tokens, an oracle supplies prices and borrowers use collateral. A problem in any dependency can affect the outcome even if the website itself loads normally.

Try this without moving money

  • Draw the interface, wallet, contracts, asset issuer and price feed separately.
  • Identify who can upgrade, pause or otherwise change the system.
  • Describe how funds could leave and what conditions could block that route.

A mistake to avoid

Do not translate “no bank branch” into “no intermediary risk.” Software, operators and governance can all introduce dependencies.

Before you act

An audit, popular interface or large deposited balance is not an insurance policy. Contracts may depend on administrator keys, price feeds, bridges and outside issuers. Understand withdrawals and liquidation before experimenting. Learning does not require depositing funds, granting approvals or using leverage, and this guide does not recommend a protocol.

A MOMENT TO REFLECT

Check your understanding.

What should a beginner map first?

A correct answer records local learning progress, not a qualification or proof of financial readiness.
