A satoshi is a Bitcoin unit, not a cash price. All amounts are fixed arithmetic examples; no live quote or purchase recommendation is shown.
- One bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis; one satoshi equals 0.00000001 BTC.
- Multiply a BTC amount by 100,000,000 to express the same amount in sats.
- Divide a satoshi amount by 100,000,000 to express the same amount in BTC.
- The conversion is fixed, but market price, provider minimums, spreads and fees are separate.
Convert 0.00025 BTC to sats, then convert 75,000 sats back to BTC without using a price chart.
The short answer
A satoshi (often shortened to sat; plural sats) is a unit of bitcoin (BTC), not a separate cryptocurrency. One BTC equals exactly 100,000,000 satoshis, so one satoshi is 0.00000001 BTC. Bitcoin.org's vocabulary guide describes a satoshi as the smallest unit recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain; the Bitcoin Core v31.1 amount definition defines one BTC as 100,000,000 satoshis.
Convert BTC and sats
To convert BTC to sats, multiply the BTC amount by 100,000,000. To convert sats to BTC, divide by 100,000,000. Moving the decimal point eight places is another way to check the same calculation.
- 0.00025 BTC = 25,000 sats
- 75,000 sats = 0.00075 BTC
These are exact unit conversions, not market prices or suggested purchase amounts. The visual above shows the whole-unit relationship and two examples; neither is a market-price estimate.
Sats are an amount; sat/vB is a fee rate
A satoshi measures an amount of bitcoin. Sat/vB means satoshis per virtual byte: a fee rate used to estimate the Bitcoin network fee for a transaction of a given virtual size. It is a rate, not another name for a satoshi balance. For the calculation and the other costs that can appear around a Bitcoin transfer, see Bitcoin transaction fees explained.
The unit stays fixed; cash value does not
The conversion between BTC and sats is fixed, but it does not tell you a cash price. The cash value of an amount of bitcoin depends on the price quote and time. A provider may also set its own purchase minimums, spreads, withdrawal rules or fees. Check the full quote and route rather than treating a satoshi count as a promise about what an amount costs or what will reach a wallet.
Bitcoin is divisible into small units, so understanding it does not require starting with a whole BTC. Whether a service lets you buy or withdraw a particular amount depends on that service's current terms and the costs of the route. For a careful route comparison, continue to how to buy Bitcoin safely.
Try the conversion without spending
If a fictional balance shows 0.002 BTC, multiply by 100,000,000: that is 200,000 sats. If another example shows 40,000 sats, divide by 100,000,000: that is 0.0004 BTC. No wallet or market-price lookup is needed.
For the larger picture, start with what Bitcoin is. In the Lightning Network guide, keep the network's separate payment mechanics distinct from the BTC unit conversion explained here.
